Regardless of age or skin condition, the Pevonia philosophy is to do what we call a "needs analysis" whereby we would look at the individual, their needs, concerns, lifestyle and goals and put together a treatment and home care package made specifically and uniquely for them.
We highly recommend for everybody our Skin Diagnosis and Skin Care Lesson workshop. This enables the client to truly understand their skin and learn how best to treat it in order to achieve long term, visible results.
The lesson includes a mini cleanse, professional skin diagnosis using a Skin Scanner which highlights underlying issues in the skin which cannot be seen with the naked eye. We would also teach product application and tips to maximise on their investment into a professional, results-driven skin care line.
Clients now seek results; in fact they are demanding it! The need to visit a spa is no longer just relaxation, pampering or time-out. It's about products, treatments and professionals delivering on the promise!
The industry is backing-up the need to treat the skin, returning to the theory of the skin, how it works, what it likes etc…
In order to achieve the above we have to understand………
The importance of skin diagnosis and skin care lesson
1. Skin analysis is vital for any treatment you perform to be successful. If we as professionals misdiagnose the skin, the client is at risk of not only a potential reaction but even more so, they won't experience the potential results that could be achieved!
2. Only once we truly understand the skin can we diagnose. At Pevonia we know that if the diagnosis is correct and the consultation card is completed in full, reactions can be avoided and results can be seen and ultimately you will be able to build a long term clientele. If a client sees results they will be less inclined to go elsewhere
3. Correct diagnosis leads to:
positive results [ accurate treatment plan
accurate home care plan
4. Visible results in the skin lead to:
you gaining respect [ repeat treatment
repeat home care programme [ client loyalty
As professionals who study skin all the time the client should be reassured in our knowledge to truly specify their skin type and their skin conditions. The client will feel overwhelmed that you care enough to spend the time to diagnose. Once a diagnosis is made on their first visit, a treatment and home care plan can be put together, highlighting how we intend to treat each concern. Every visit thereafter you should reassess the skin, monitor the results and adapt the treatment plan where appropriate. When the right treatments are administered and the client commits to home care it will allow you to upgrade their level of treatment.
It is important to understand the skin, and recognise skin is the largest and most complex organ of the human body, designed to protect, excrete and regulate. You have to understand and respect it. Remember skin changes; you have to be able to read skin, learn to upgrade routines and be prescriptive. Remember different skins react differently to the same products.
The importance of skin facts
Typically, one square centimetre of skin contains: 3,000,000 cells, 3 blood vessels,10 hairs ,12 nerves ,15 sebaceous glands ,100 sudoriferous (sweat glands)
How many clients really understand how to apply skincare? How many people do you know that have bought a numerous collection of products which because they were baffled by the 'saleswoman' or felt obliged to purchase, yet they are left on the bathroom shelf untouched?
Do your clients even know what skin type they are? Do your clients know where to apply product?
Probably not! Eye products are the No. 1 application mistake causing their own eye bags! Another is Lotion and Skin Cream applied around the eyes!
Do your clients know how much product to use? Do your clients know the difference between a retail brand and a professional Skincare brand? Do your clients know where to go to get the best possible advice?
Educate your client! A lesson will make sure the client has fully understood the use of their products, help them to make them last the time they should and are applied correctly to achieve the best possible results therefore maximising their purchases in order to upgrade and make repeat purchases in the future.
The best way to address a skincare lesson is to assume that your client has no experience of how to use skincare products, this way you will not forget to tell them anything.
The importace of consultation
Consultation is the most important aspect of skin care. Only by asking the questions will you find the answer. If you go to a doctor, they will ask questions until they are able to diagnose - then prescribe! Every client should receive a full 15 minute consultation prior to treatment and a 5-minute check-up per visit.
Consultation card questions
In order to set out the correct treatment plan and to supply the individual with the right products to achieve results this consultation card must be filled out in its entirety.
1. What would you say is your skin type?
This is always interesting to hear as so often they are very wrong. Therefore could they describe their skin section by section (nose, cheeks, forehead, jaw line, neck and décolleté).
2. How often do you receive a facial?
The reason we ask this question is to determine how committed they are to a skincare routine, as 60% of their results are provided by treatments.
3. Have you recently received spa services?
This can be due to the skin being delicate post treatment and will require temporary interim care, It can also explain problems in the skin due to over treatment on a condition.
4. Have you received any surgical or medical procedures?
The client must follow the surgeon's aftercare advice first before applying products.
5. What home care products do you currently use?
This helps us to gage their commitment to a product line and what they are used to using. Some of the brands they use may be causing the problems in the skin but we must address this discreetly by using the Ingredients To Avoid fact sheet.
6. If you could improve anything about your skin, what would it be?
This helps us to realise what their main concern is and we must bear this in mind when making your recommendations. This will also determine how realistic they are about what can be achieved and in what timescale. It also tells you that what ever they are using now is not addressing their needs, providing you with the opportunity to recommend a product that will specifically address their needs.
7. General health record.
Some skin conditions can be aggravated or spread further. In these cases medical advice may need to be sought.
8. Allergies?
Use the Pevonia Product Ingredient Information Booklet where it lists A-Z nut oils and essential oils. If hay fever arises, only severe sufferers will need to avoid products that have pollen. In the case of Iodine allergies avoid those products with seaweed content.
9. Are you currently receiving chemotherapy or radiotherapy?
While receiving treatment the skin can be very unpredictable and is often very sensitive and dry, therefore this information must be considered when making recommendations. Often sufferers are told to use nothing but soap and water even to the point of no deodorant.
10. Are you currently taking medications, herbs, vitamins etc?
This can explain reasons for certain skin types and may lead to slower healing i.e. antibiotics. In terms of herbs and vitamins it is only homeopathic medicines that are thought to clash with Aromatherapy. Menthol also clashes with homeopathy.
11. Have you ever been prescribed Accutane?
This is a drug often given to acne sufferers and can cause the skin to be highly sensitive and very reactive. The full line and treatments must not be administered to that client for 3-6 months after finishing Accutane. Best product recommendations are Sensitive repairing skin Care lines.
12. Hormones?
Please note that the skin changes with hormonal fluctuation and may respond differently approaching and during menstrual cycle and pregnancy is prime. If a client has an extensive medical history, ensure you seek further guidance. Please make extra notes where applicable, write on what is sold and any specific recommendations of use that you made so that it can be kept on file and used for future reference.
The ways in which to alnalyse the skin
1. Observation - you can't beat the naked eye! This is your first observation and along with touching the skin you will identify the general condition of the skin. This will improve once you have had experience with a woods light.
2. Magnifying Lamp - the lamp magnifies the skin five times enabling you to expand on your findings in the observation phase. This stage can offer some clarification on certain skin conditions.
3. Woods Lamp - this is a unique and impressive way to analyse the skin and it is usual for it to pick up concerns that you might have missed otherwise i.e.: Pigmentation. It can also pick up the severity of a condition and will therefore make it easier to know the course of action to take. % each condition. For example 80% sensitive and 20% dehydration.
4. Skin Scanner - show client - ultimate benefit - what you can see, they can see.
